Seaside and Community Events: January 16 – January 18, 2026
The wreck of the Peter Iredale are shown in these photographs, the oldest taken before and after by Portland photographer Leo Simon on November 13, 1906, nineteen days after the ship ran aground near Ft. Stevens.
Although the ship has been broken up by waves, wind, and sand over the years, the wreck of the Peter Iredale continues to be a popular tourist attraction.
The Peter Iredale was a four-masted steel bark built in Maryport, England, in 1890 and owned by British shipping firm Iredale & Porter. On September 26, 1906, the Iredale left Salina Cruz, Mexico, bound for Portland, where it was to pick up a cargo of wheat for the United Kingdom. Despite encountering heavy fog, they managed to safely reach the mouth of the Columbia River early in the morning of October 25. The captain of the ship, H. Lawrence, later recalled that, as they waited for a pilot, “a heavy southeast wind blew and a strong current prevailed. Before the vessel could be veered around, she was in the breakers and all efforts to keep her off were unavailing.” The Iredale ran aground at Clatsop Beach, hitting so hard that three of her masts snapped from the impact. Fortunately, none of the crew were seriously injured. Captain Lawrence ordered that the ship be abandoned, and rockets were launched to signal for help.
The lifesaving station at Point Adams quickly responded, sending a team of men to rescue the crew. It was a dangerous task, but the lifesavers managed to bring all twenty-seven crewmen, including two stowaways, safely to shore. William K. Inman, one of the lifesavers who helped Captain Lawrence ashore, remembered that the red-bearded captain stood stiffly at attention, saluted his ship, and said “May God bless you and may your bones bleach in these sands.” He then turned and addressed his men with a bottle of whisky in his hand. “Boys,” he said, “have a drink.” The British Naval Court later ruled that the sudden wind shift and the strong current were responsible for the stranding of the ship, and that the captain and his officers were “in no wise to blame.”
The wrecked bark became an immediate tourist attraction. The day after the ship ran ashore the Oregon Journal reported that the wreck “proved a strong attraction…and in spite of the gale that was raging scores flocked to the scene of the disaster.” They noted that the Astoria & Columbia River Railroad was already planning to run excursion trains to the site.
The Peter Iredale is now one of the most accessible shipwrecks on the West Coast. It has remained here, slowly decaying on the shore for more than a century. At low tide, visitors can walk up to the vessel’s remains and wonder about how it met such a fate. The shipwreck is located just beyond the parking lot at Fort Stevens State Park.
And if you’d like to experience a bit of that same coastal magic for yourself, there’s no better way than staying nearby. Our Sand & Sea condos and cozy Cascadia Getaways homes place you just minutes from the Peter Iredale and the windswept beauty of Fort Stevens. Plan a January getaway and enjoy these seasonal coastal favorites—quiet beaches, dramatic skies, and unforgettable history—all waiting to be explored. Consider conditions: Minus tides are ideal but clamming is possible on smaller positive tides as well. In fall and winter, check surf and swell advisories, as rougher conditions can make it harder to find clams and more dangerous

On View: January 9 – February 15, 2026

The Cannon Beach Gallery is proud to present Light, Air, and Atmosphere, a group exhibition featuring the photography of Zemula Barr, Jeff Gracz, Michael Kay, and Thibult Roland. This show celebrates the fleeting qualities of light, space, and atmosphere, offering viewers a contemplative journey through both natural and imagined landscapes.
Zemula Barr explores the ephemeral beauty of the environment through her photography, inviting viewers into moments of quiet reflection. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Perspective Gallery (Evanston, IL), Lightbox Photographic Gallery (Astoria, OR), and Chehalem Cultural Center (Newberg, OR), as well as in online exhibitions with the Center for Fine Art Photography, ArtDoc Magazine, and F-Stop Magazine.
Jeff Gracz has spent decades navigating the natural world, arranging shapes, forms, lines, and colors within the rectangle of his viewfinder. From his first camera as a teenager to his current practice, Gracz continues his pursuit of the elusive perfect image, capturing the subtle order and rhythms of nature.
Michael Kay turns decades of photographic experience into digital art, using post-processing and compositing to create images that are both visually striking and accessible. Working in small and large formats, Kay blends reality and imagination, producing mixed digital media and canvas prints for collectors and enthusiasts. He is represented by Gallery 408 in Camas, WA, and actively participates in the regional arts community.
Thibult Roland, originally from France, combines his background in physics and optics with a passion for photography to create images that are both precise and poetic. Specializing in black and white landscapes, seascapes, and architecture, Roland also teaches workshops and lectures, sharing techniques such as long exposure, infrared, and tilt/shift photography. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he continues to expand his fine art practice.
Together, these artists offer diverse perspectives on light, air, and atmosphere, capturing the transient qualities that shape our perception of the world and inviting viewers to experience both its beauty and its mystery.

Long Beach Peninsula
Erin Adkisson and Alka Collins
📅 January 17, 2026 | Ends at 8:30 pm
📍The Sou’wester, 3728 J Place Seaview
Erin Adkisson began singing in church and howling with wolves at night. Homeschooled until college, studying theatre and music. Now a vocalist in several Portland bands, including The Druthers, since 2008, Erin is a mainstay harmony artist in the music scene. Genuine and gripping, sensual and powerful. Erin has the extraordinary ability of turning into a completely unique instrument. Crawdaddies is her latest single. The song is a midsummer night’s tale about good timing and liminal space.
Aika Collins is known for writing ‘fun lil bummer’ bops and slinging harmonies around Portland, OR. Crafting heavy heart-break indie-pop songs that are thoughtful and show resilience. Part Amy Winehouse’s radiant energy, part Brandi Carlile’s community-driven soul; their sound is bright and eclectic. C’est la vie bébé is Aika’s debut single. The song is about battling with self worth, loneliness and feeling hopeless in a world that we cannot keep up with. The song is inspired by Daniel Johnston’s song “Story of an Artist” off his 2006 album “Welcome to My World.”
